Ha… Ha… Ha… I am disappointed with Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II. It produces a low quality image, poor contrast and colour. Not sharp at all. Can’t use it at all in indoor without flash. Even with internal flash also produce poor image.
This is my first SLR camera. I did not expect the image that I took look even worst than my Canon PowerShot A700. Never go for the kit lens if you have extra money. It has poor resolution. However, you cannot ask for more with RM350 price tag. Anyway, it is a very cheap lens.
Planned to get Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM as my first portrait lens. Then, will get an external flash. =)
wahaha….so long didn’t see u (almost 2 weeks.
). u finally get your camera. when will u gonna takes a photo album to me? i will be your first model… haha…
[...] Wow… SLR camera is fun. It took me quite some time to familiar with all its functions. The camera is great but the lens suck. [...]
Any time you want… But the current lens quality not good. Maybe wait after I buy EF 50mm F1.4 USM first.
Wah lao, you actually got a camera. Wished I had the money to get one lol.
No more new PC system for me this year lo…
Maybe next year also cannot buy due to most of the money will go for better lens already…
For the price, the quality on the 18-55 is great. As for indoor use, bump up your ISO (shoot in PSAM) to reduce your blur. Learn your settings and you will maximize the SLR ability. Professionals don’t need great cameras to make great pictures. We use our understanding of photography and equipment to make the equipment carry out our vision.
As for the sharpness, bump up the internal sharpness in camera (or do it in post). The 18-55 is actually fairly sharp for a kit lens and does better than non-canon brands.
The 50 1.4 is my favorite lens. It’s the best price for image quality in the Canon lineup. I wouldn’t knock the 18-55 though. I have 2.8 from 16-200mm; but if I didn’t drop $5K I’d use that kit lens a bunch.
Oh, I looked at your gallery. Shoot in M or AV. You aren’t getting sharp images because you shoot at f14 and f11 outdoors. never shoot above f8 if you can avoid it; the diffusion softens the image too much. don’t be afraid to take the 400D up to ISO 800 indoors; the grain is worth the extra 100% in light.
Learn your settings.
High ISO = grain
Low ISO = need more light
High F-stop = diffusion
Low f-stop = smaller DOF (good and bad)
High shutter speed = frozen images
Low shutter speed = blurry images
Hi Gavin,
