Oh, I looked at your gallery. Shoot in M or AV. You aren't getting sharp images because you shoot at f14 and f11 outdoors. never shoot above f8 if you can avoid it; the diffusion softens the image too much. don't be afraid to take the 400D up to ISO 800 indoors; the grain is worth the extra 100% in light.

Learn your settings.

High ISO = grain
Low ISO = need more light
High F-stop = diffusion
Low f-stop = smaller DOF (good and bad)
High shutter speed = frozen images
Low shutter speed = blurry images

For the price, the quality on the 18-55 is great. As for indoor use, bump up your ISO (shoot in PSAM) to reduce your blur. Learn your settings and you will maximize the SLR ability. Professionals don't need great cameras to make great pictures. We use our understanding of photography and equipment to make the equipment carry out our vision.

As for the sharpness, bump up the internal sharpness in camera (or do it in post). The 18-55 is actually fairly sharp for a kit lens and does better than non-canon brands.

The 50 1.4 is my favorite lens. It's the best price for image quality in the Canon lineup. I wouldn't knock the 18-55 though. I have 2.8 from 16-200mm; but if I didn't drop $5K I'd use that kit lens a bunch.
