Citibank has a promotion with Shell Citibank Credit Card. You can buy HP Compaq Presario PC700 Notebook for RM799. However, the system specifications at Citibank website are not clear.
PC specs (from Citibank website):
- Intel Celeron
- 512MB memory
- 80GB HDD
- DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
- 15.4” WXGA TFT
- FREE DOS
The notebook is still considered cheap with RM150 delivery and processing charges. RM949 for a HP notebook is cheap. However, does it worth the price?
I searched online for its specifications. But failed to find it. Therefore, I contacted Citibank and HP. Finally, I got it…

It’s indeed very cheap and affordable. If you need a laptop urgently to do some paperworks, watching movie , listening to music, still ok lah. But i think you are just buying a 5 yrs old laptop. If i were you i would forego this offer

We can add on USB WIFI and USB Bluetooth. But I am not sure about Windows XP. Anyway, I am going to buy it. Will try to install Windows XP then.
By the way, HP did not provide all Windows XP drivers. We need to download them from other website.
well. i just got the notebook. added 1gb ram. installed xp. the only hard part is getting the required drivers for this since its designed for vista. googling the drivers will do the trick.
other than that. its running smoothly on xp. im not sure for vista ^^

btw, they will ask you to upgrade to the 1799 package which is duacore, wifi and 1gb plus vista basic. if u really insist, just tell them you want the 799 package.
you can upgrade to extended 1/2 year warranty (walk in) for RM100/200. i took one year extended warranty. in total adds up to RM1024.

When i boot into the installation page and select which drive where i want to install the OS but system keep tell me dont detect any harddisk? so you all solve the problem? pls tell me….. Talking about the Windows XP driver, I managed to find chipset, display and storage from Intel website. They should work.
However, I still did not able to find audio driver from Conexant. It does not have driver on its website.

Did you install Microsoft UAA first?
wayne: that is hardest part ever. that step make me format my notebook twice to installed it
1stly, you cant installed The microsoft uAA driver like that. i tried it million times. you need to install at the time of installing xp sp2. XP will prompt you to insert The microsoft uAA driver disk 1. you need the actual kb888111 release. here the link
unrar. burn it to disc and insert it during the prompt.
finally..xp will detect the HD AUDIO and the HD MODEM.
2ndly…installing sound driver….you need to go to device manager and choose update driver.
1. Click on Start and select Run. Now type devmgmt.msc and press enter.
2. Right click on “Audio device on High Definition Audio Bus” and click Update driver.
3. Select “Install from a list or specific location”
4. Click Next. Then select “Don’t search, I will choose the driver to install”
5. Click Next and then select “Sound, video and game controller” from the list.
6. Click Next and then click Have Disk.
7. Click Browse C:\swsetup\spXXXXX folder and the double click the V32 folder. Select the .inf file, click open and Continue with the onscreen instructions.
use Conexant High Definition Audio Driver ver. 3.38.0.50 A located at here
the above link wont work for c749tu series. you will end up getting “unable to start device” msg.
similarly, try the same also for the modem driver.
remember you need to force XP to recognise your driver. so xp will prompt you with weird msg.

C700 series should contains a mini card slot, you are option to use USB or mini card for wireless
i just got the notebook and install windows vista. but i feel slow and now i want to install windows xp. and thanks for Wayne. cause when i install windows xp i also face the problem harddisk not found…hahah…hope can work… and didnt u think can upgrade cpu in future?

Kenny, it should have mini PCI express slot for WIFI. But I doubt it has the antenna for WIFI since it is a value package.
ken, no much CPU option for GL960 chipset. You have to stick to 533Mhz bus speed.

yeah, GL960 and GM965 is 2 different thing, no combine
both using X3100 with render speed 400MHz(GL960), 500MHz(GM965).
GL960 only support 553Mhz Ram, not support core 2 duo. while GM965 can. I knew C710TU is using GM965, C700TU suppose to be same, you can check it by software “everest”

I think you can enable “Place audio icon in the taskbar” at Sounds and Audio Devices Properties to east your audio volume control.

It is recommended to have 1GB RAM add on this laptop. 512MB is too small nowadays. 512MB is still OK for normal usage on Windows XP but it is definitely not enough for Windows Vista.
wayne: your modem should be the same steps as audio. instead of sound, audio…you shld choose modem instead. btw…extract out the modem driver(.exe) file using winrar would be way better.

and IMPT: dont ever ever try to update your modem and sound driver on your windows update. you will again get the weird “unable to start device” msg.

Well I’m not a gamer actually. And I bought this laptop for my wife. Although I didn’t check details about the Intel’s Chipset spec, but Celeron will be satisfying me. FYI, the windows XP startup is quite ok.
I added warranty, become 3 years 3 time on site for RM220 only.
Actually the HP sales got offer me some other laptops. But I guess if want worth it cheapest is this one. You can enjoy multimedia (dvd), online (with the USB Wifi) etc.
Personally I’m grateful to get this cheap laptop for 3 years warranty. The same series they have Core 2 Duo etc models. But for those you can actually get other brand.
Ask some Intel guy how they tested on Celeron. To me Celeron is always enough speed and stable for non gamers!!!
This Citibank offer is really unbeatable price. Today I saw compaq advertise extended warranty for RM359. I’m so lucky to get it RM220.

Hey Jayce, not bad your website can be found using Google. Type C749TU and found ur website.
Breakdown or not is very hard to say for compaq. My 2001 compaq claim warranty twice within 3 years last time. The LCD screen change new coz the hinge loosen (when you close the LCD screen, it will bang by gravity). And the mother board got no battery (the stupid technician from HP change whole M/B for me since he don’t know that model can change battery actually).
Well my previous laptop was AMD Duron 900Mhz. Currently still working fine with XP with some upgrade on RAM and HDD.
So I expect this Celeron to be great since it is design for Vista as well.

Anyone can confirm whether it is using Mobile Intel® GL960 or GM965 Express Chipset. It will be great if it is GM965.
How many memory slots available? It supports DDR2 533 or 667 or both Mhz?

It has 2 memory slots. GL960 support only 533Mhz but you can always put higher Mhz memory. Just it will run at 533Mhz only.

I am wondering why is there no wireless when there is a wireless connection button on the upper left button. I have tried clicking on it, but it doesnt shut off. It is on perpetually. Hi Er Lern, it is confirm that NO WIRELESS on this laptop based on the spec.
Else it won’t sell so cheap. The casing is used for all C700 series. Other model has wireless. So it must have wireless connection button.
There is a wireless module slot beside memory slot if not mistaken. You can plug in wireless module there. Else just get yourself an USB WIFI device will do.
Hie, If you want to insert mini PCI wireless, make sure there is antenna cable.
If they remove the wireless card, maybe they remove the antenna as well. So beware!
Darn, how much does it cost to get a mini pci wireless for the module slot? (and here I thought SHELL/HP was giving a REAL bargain…)

Er Lern, I am not sure that we can find it easily. End user don’t usually buy mini PCI wireless module. You can buy from HP but that will be expensive than USB WIFI lo.
Since all the celeron models for C700 series support 533-Mhz FSB only, so there is no necessary to get GM965 Chipset.
There is some reason about RAM can be use up to 667Mhz.
From Wikipedia:

The memory will run 5/4 times as fast as the FSB in this situation, meaning a 133 MHz bus can run with the memory at 166 MHz. This is often referred to as an ‘asynchronous’ system. It is important to realize that due to differences in CPU and system architecture, overall system performance can vary in unexpected ways with different FSB-to-memory ratios.
If anyone is going to China you can get mini PCI WLAN for less than RM100. But if there is no Antenna?
If you want to service C700 or refer the spec, below is the most useful link. You can do whatever upgrade/add on here. But make sure it won’t cause you OUT OF WARRANTY!

Jayce, I not yet upgrade anything. But waiting for April’s PC fair. Hopefully that time won’t increase price. Add 1GB so total is 1.5GB then.
Is almost 2GB liao and I think I won’t go for 2GB unless I wanna throw my 512MB……
Anyway the freedos which preinstall in the laptop is good for partition your hdd before installing Windows (If you are good at DOS).
And before I install I disable something about SATA in BIOS.
And original warranty is 1 year not 90days. I receive the full quotation from HP says 1 year I think. 90days probably for desktop……

I too got a compaq presario C747TU from citibank shell card at RM1799.
I too have the problem with Vista so I formatted and now I am faced with the same problem of no sound and my wireless does not work.
Theres an advice in this forum trail that mentioned the installing of uAA in which during intallation, windows will prompt you to insert the disk. My problem here is that the prompt did not appear..Anyone can help please?

90 days? i dont think so. all notebooks come with 1 year warranty. 90 days are for desktops.

For the dual-channel memory module, don’t think is good idea to add 1GB. Understand that 512MB+1GB may not work well on dual-channel.

512MB+1G MB still able contructs the dual channel but the performance will not as good as 512+512 or 1G+1G. thats call unbalance dual channel, anyway the performance still better than single channel.

I don’t care about dual-channel or single-channel performance. I just know that performance is very bad if Windows run out of memory and start using HDD as page file.

However I’m not so sure about dual channel actually, “In Real Life” or “In Real Laptop” life how could it improve with. Anyone can do the testing with XP let us know. As our laptop is “Shared Video Memory”, I believe somehow 1.5GB RAM could be better than 2 512MB Ram.

Wayne, it might not support Flex memory mode. However, adding more RAM will definitely improve your Windows cache. Size does matter than speed in memory world. However, having both size and speed are better lo.
koktong, yes, it is for motherboard. I cannot find it at Intel mobile website. Hopefully, Mobile Intel® GM965 Express Chipset has this feature too.
Anyway, I prefer 2 GB single channel slow RAM than 1 GB dual channel fast RAM on a machine that use more than 1 GB memory. Your system will be very slow when Windows start to use HDD.

Confirm this laptop support flex memory mode. Actually for 945 above intel board all supported. campare with single channel, pure dual channel able boost up to 40%-50% performance on gaming, for software using only boost up around 10%. Somebody tested before, 1G ram in XP not much different with 2G ram (exclude Vista), 2X512MB will well performance than 1.5G. With this solo core processor, strongly not suggest for Vista, performance decrease a lot

I have followed the step you suggested but got a question here:-
you mentioned that we need to install at the time of installing xp sp2. And, XP will prompt us to insert The microsoft uAA driver disk 1. May I know that do we need to press any key in order the XP installation will prompt us for the uAA driver? Sorry for asking bcause I tried to install the xp:sp2 but can’t see it prompt for the driver.

I found the file is EXE file after I unrar it.
It is an installation file to install the uAA driver directly.

Ya, in XP, 1G ram not much different with 2G ram. In Vista, you can feel the difference. If to install XP, go for 2×512MB. For Vista and long run, sell the 512MB and go for 2×1GB.

For office application processing and surfing purposes, I believe it is a very good buy for branded new unit with less than RM1K. By upgrading the RAM to 1GB+1GB (add on RM150), it should be able to last you for at least 5 years. Hope you still can get the battery for that long…

“Shell Citibank Card – A Cash Draining Card Are you fancy of getting a credit card that offers 5% rebate on shell petrol and 1.5% rebate on other purchases?
If your answer is yes, then you are draining your money away!
The newly launched Shell Citibank credit card is not as good as its sounds – to enjoy the rebate, you must have a carry forward balance. Yes, a carry forward balance that you have to pay Citibank 18% interest per annum. But that’s is not all, your so called ‘rebate’ is based on your current month spending. That means if you have a carry forward of RM10,000 but did not use the card at all for the current month, you get ‘zero’ rebate.
To be precise, this ‘rebate’ card is an old card – it has been around for about 2 years. But now taking advantage of the fuel cost concern, Citibank co-branded it with Shell.
This is how the rebate scheme works:
First, you need to have a carry forward balance. The amount of that carry forward determines the rebate rate (%) that the card holder is getting.
Then based on your current month spend, you will get the rebate (as shown by the rebate table above) – your rebate is not based on your total carry forward balance. Repeat: your rebate is not based on your total carry forward balance, but current month spending In short, to get your ‘rebate’ you must have at least of RM2,000 outstanding balance in you card AND continue use the card. The outstanding balance is the net of previous month balance minus current month payment. If you do that, every month you will be paying RM30.00, or RM360 a year for the minimum RM2,000 outstanding balance.
Let’s do a simple math here:
If you spend RM500/mth on shell petrol and your classic card has a RM2,000 outstanding balance, at 1.5%, you are getting RM7.50 as ‘rebate’, while at the same time, paying RM30.00 for the interest. The ‘nett’ profit for Citibank is RMRM22.50. Your are essentially “over paying” 4 times the price (30/7.5)
To ‘break even’ (so that your RM30.00 interest payment = rebate value), you need to pump RM2,000 shell petrol a month, or charge RM6,000 a month for non-shell related purchases.
The USD100.00 per barrel of crude oil won’t kill you, but the Citi-Shell card will.”
Alyx, thanks for the help. I managed to solve the audio issue and now got sound after few reboots. However, I noticed the headphone doesn’t working fine. When I plug the headphone in my notebook, the sound still come out from the speaker instead of headset. Do you have any idea on how to solve it?
Jayce, I just called the HP contact center this morning and confirmed on the warranty.
They told me that the 90 days warranty updated in Citibank website is for Desktop only but is sold out currently. All the notebooks are having 1 year warranty by default.
Wayne, noticed you have followed the steps suggested by Alyx and successfully installed the audio drivers to be working fine. Have you test on the headphone? I tried mine and it is not working….
Beside, understand that you r having the “unknown device” in the list. Have you solve it? I also got the same thing happen to my C749TU notebook and managed to solve it yesterday nite.
The unknown device actually is for HP Quick Launch Buttons and HID-complant device. Your “unknown device” will go off and detected as Human Interface Devices after you have installed the Quick Launch Button Driver. You can get the driver from the following link.

All the credit cards are cash draining. It depends how you use it. My advise is clear all your bill every month.
Shell Citibank is good enough to give us C749TU offered at RM949. However you can juz throw the card away and report lost if you afraid the “Draining Effect” happen!
Of course don’t too believe on those rebate etc. Because all the credit card company have only 1 purpose: To Earn Money.
Anyway, my advise is when you but the laptop (if more than 1 K), don’t take the free interest installment. Instead pay 1 shot to avoid any commitment if you need to cancel the card anytime.

Hi Wayne, regardless whether you fully settle the C/F outstanding amount every billing cycle or not, as long as there is spending on current month, you will get the tier 1 or tier 2 rebate. Interest will only be charged if not fully settle.
Let me quote an example… assuming:-
1. You are the new Gold card holder and received the card on 15/01/08. 2. The statement date is 1st of the month.
3. The due date is 21th of the month.
4. You have spent RM5,000 on fuel from 15/01/08 to 01/02/08.
5. You continue spending RM3,000 on fuel from 02/02/08 to 01/03/08.
When you receive the 1st statement (15/01/08 – 01/02/08), the B/F balance is RM0 and your spending is RM5,000. In 1st billing, you will get a rebate of RM125 based on 2.5% of RM5,000 (Tier 1: RM0 – RM4,000). The C/F amount is RM5,000 – RM125 = RM4,875.
6. Then you make a payment of RM4,875 on 20/02/08.
When you receive the 2nd statement (02/02/08 – 01/03/08), the B/F balance is RM4,875 and your spending is RM3,000. In 2nd billing, you will get a rebate of RM150 based on 5.0% of RM3,000 (Tier 2: >RM4,000). The C/F amount is RM4,875 – RM4,875 + RM3,000 – RM150 = RM2,850. No interest will be charged due to B/F amount is fully settled before due date on 21/02/08.

frank, yes..i tried it with my notebook and its the same as yours. sounds coming from both speakers. im guessing the sound driver since the driver is “borrowed” from another model and not the actual driver released by HP itself.
i also read somewhere that the microphone doesnt work too. havent tried it yet myself.
I WILL NOT SUBMIT TO VISTA…maybe in another year time..but not now..

i dont think you need a step by step. everything is just basic installing.
just need to remember that u have to disable SATA in the bios setting b4 installing XP. prepare the uAA driver before. you need to insert at the time of installing XP.

Actually you consider to purchase this notebook with the affordable price. If you prefer wifi, u can talk with compad which they can add other spec to meet your requirement. It’s already stated on FAQ citibank. About bluetooth, you can buy bluetooth driver just RM30. Wifi adapter /receiver USB just only below RM80. So, totally you just need to pay another ~RM100 then can have its all.

i bought my usb wifi dlink for $85. dont really fancy dlink but that shop was out of belkin and i dont trust net gear. got a bit of prob with the Wireless Zero Configuration but manage to get it working..not bad..
and..plug in the usb wifi coupled with your usb mouse and thumb drive, youre out of usb port…need to get a usb hub or else 3 wont be enough.
3 USB ports are just enough. I bought my USB WiFi card for RM55 only.
Called HP and the consultant promotes the upgrade to RM1799, additional RM850 for Dual Core, Vista Basic and all drivers pre-installed, add 512MB RAM, add 40GB hard disk, built-in WiFi Module, Webcam and DVD writer. Also mentioned that XP is not recommended for this unit and not easy to install the drivers.
Do you think the add-on worth RM850? I have worked out something like Dual Core – RM50, Vista Basic – RM350, Add 512MB – RM40, Add 40GB – RM50, WiFi Module – RM200, Webcam – RM100, DVD writer – RM50 and total is about RM840. It is quite close if my work out is right. What do you think? Please help to decide. Thanks.
Actually, HP provides 3 models to choose. Another model Presario V3631TU is priced at RM2899 with Core 2 Duo CPU.
Presario C747TU (RM1799) is consider good value if you want to use Windows Vista since most of the laptop in this price range does not bundle with Windows Vista.
I will take C747TU if I want to use Windows Vista else I will take C749TU and install Windows XP myself.
Frank, the modem works fine. I’ve tried with TMNET 1515.
Compaq will not add Wifi or other spec to C749TU. I’ve asked before.
Only certain upgrade such as memory are offering.

If ur thinking of upgrading CPU .. pentium M series I think goes up to 1.8 ?
Problem with celeron is with its l2 cache….
Pentium M is faster .. so if u want to upgrade .. onli pentium m is the onli choice.
Any other cpu like prescott 2.8 533 series oso can but make short work of ur batt life.

Please note that the divers will be based on the bios revision and MOBO revision which nid some IT knowledge to get it.
Even on the same model the bios may have been downgraded to prevent upgrades .. biz .. mah .. but u can upgrade it by flashing a new bios.
Hey doc2mee, Pentium M is old technology. Celeron M 540 is better than it. And use less power.
Most of us use USB WiFi card on this laptop.
As for drivers, we have all the working Windows XP drivers already. I put it up on Windows XP driver for HP Compaq Presario C749TU Notebook PC. Please check it out there.

Hi evelyn, don’t bother to buy this laptop if you need wireless, bluetooth, webcam. Because none of these features are found in this laptop. :p
You need to add on them one by one. That mean you have to buy USB WiFi, USB bluetooth and USB webcam. All these item are external. It is not easy to carry around.
Better find another model with all these features built in.

For those who would like to install WinXP without changing the BIOS Setting (SATA), Kindly refer my following reply. Notice that the steps are using for V3000. I’m not sure the SATA driver selection for C749TU is same or not at step 7!!!
Please follow the step by step as below:
1. download Intel Mass Storage(Intel 3600) from HP Compaq Presario driver page.
2. extract the ‘SP32492.exe’ in any other machine(it will go to c:\spsetup\SP32492 by default).
3. copy c:\spsetup\SP32492\*.* into your USB thumb drive.
4. attach your USB floppy drive into HP Compaq Presario V3000 laptop.
5. boot up from Windows XP installation disk.
6. look at bottom of the installation screen and hit F6 when it said F6 blah blah….
7. insert a floppy disk into external USB floppy drive, press “S” for supplier hardware device support disk. Select Intel 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller(iaStor.sys).
8. basically the Intel Mass Storage SATA/RAID drivers loaded.
9. Windows XP installation continue for now.

Alex Yeoh, I see. Both model should use the same motherboard. So drivers should be the same on both model. Have you try install HP Quick Launch Buttons Driver? That solve my unknown hardware issue.

i think C747TU all driver will be same as C749TU. except C747TU hv wireless. so used the driver name as (Atheros 5.30 802.11b/g WiFi Adapter) this one can work. About the webcam, i just install cyberlink YouCam only.

Finally got the notebook on Monday. The delivery process is quite fast, about 6 working days. Took the C747TU. Personally added on 1GB ram and Vista works much better on 2GB ram.

Quite happy with the C747TU, except the following:
1. The ac adapter is a bit hot when the notebook battery is being charged;
2. Feel the heat at the surface next to the left hand side of the touchpad. Think that is the place where the processor and heat sink are located.
Do you have the same on C749TU?
ling, if you do not know much on computer, I would recommend you to take C747TU (RM1799) instead of C749TU (RM949). It will eliminate the hassle on installation and more worthy for long run. Anyway, is your own choice.
Forget to informy you guys. I bought 2GB RAM for the laptop.
Heard that Corsair is better than Kingston. But the warranty might not as easy as Kingston.
After inserting 2GB, I didn’t run any testing.
But 1 thing I’ve found is that there is 2 connector for Mini PCI WLAN card. I guess it is connected to the antenna. So, got confident we can juz buy a mini PCI and install it.
August will buy 1 try from China. Maybe cost around RM50.
Jayce, about Ubuntu, is it useful? Can install together with WinXP as 2 OS like Redhat too? It is quite interesting because Ubuntu can install in C749TU without additional drivers. I believe the OS is using very little resource right?
ling, the laptop model is C749TU (PC700). The laptop is good for normal usage like office work, surf Internet, watch DVD and listening to MP3.
Phang, the power adapter produces hot too (but consider ok) for C749TU model.
koktong, Ubuntu… I just boot it up using CD. Didn’t install it into HDD. It only use up around 200MB RAM. And around 250MB when loaded with several applications. It is better than Windows. Too bad that I did not manage to make the Firefox work.

I received C749TU on Feb and till now I’m using mostly for Internet & movies watching, so far so good.(Games like diner dash is OK).
I’ve tried installing Wlan card taken out from Acer Aspire 4315 (forgot what Wlan brand) but sorry to say, it failed, when boot-up, asked to remove the card. So I think it’s quite choosy on the brand of Wlan.
For those who still can’t install the audio & modem driver, pls. let the driver search by itself through internet.

For example if you purchase C747TU (RM1799), you can pay monthly for RM149.92 (RM1799/12) but you have to inform HP during your order confirmation.
As for C749TU, I was informed by HP sales rep, I must add 1 bag (RM90) total=RM1039 but when my friend make confirmation, it is not applicable pls. confirm with HP sales on this matter if you wish to pay installment.

The hardware spec given, ie Dual Core processor, additional 40GB harddisk and additional 512MB ram is more capable and ready for OS such as Vista. Nowaday, DVD disc is so common and cheap. It is good to have a DVD writer. In built Wireless and Webcam are so mobile and convenient. Just switch it on when you want it.
Why get the RM1799 in PC fair? You can get direct from the HP consultant.
The celeron with 512MB should not have any problem running XP at all, but not Vista. If you want to run Vista, just upgrade the RAM to the max 2GB.
Personally I have added additional 1 piece of 1GB ram. In total I have 2GB ram now. The Vista is running smooth and fine.

ck, I bought C749TU =RM949, add 512MB ram=RM35 plus 2nd hand Wifi card (mini pci) =RM130 total I paid (cash) so far= RM1114. With additional RM285 u get dual core (T2370), web cam and DVD Burner some more can pay installment. U be the judge.
I have installed Wlan card (BroadCom 802.11 B/G – BCM94311MCGP) and it works fine, prior to that I tried to install (Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABG-WM3945ABG MOW2) but my system can’t boot. So this notebook is quite choosy on the Wlan card.

Guys, i’ve seen the inside for the RAM and mini-pci area. Yes, there area antenna connectors for wifi module.

alyx, to install the wlan, just open the same compartment where you add in the ram, there is an empty mini-pci slot and 2 cables for the antenna, just plug in the card and both the cables then install the driver which you can download here :

GM965 support >2GB memory while GL960 only support max 2GB. I still don’t know which chipset this notebook use.
512MB RAM on Windows Vista? Better add another 1GB RAM else your HDD will die very fast.
you can go to intel website – they have a chipset identifier tool which u can use to id ur chipset , from that i found out mine is running 965
I downloaded that tool before. But did not have much time to play with it. The notebook is with my girl friend now. Will try to test it when free.

RM1399 package should have the same drivers as RM949. But I did not have the RM1399 package with me.

In the specifications, you mentioned “Graphic Chipset – Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator x3100 (shared) up to 64MB Total Available Graphics Memory”. Poseidon, Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator x3100 is not for serious gaming. You still can play games that requires more than 64MB memory. But the performance is VERY SLOW.

RM1399 package is a good deal if you like those add-ons. Drivers should be the same as C749TU. You can always wait for others to buy and try it before you make the purchase.

If inclueded it worth. because if u change the dvd combo to dvd writer it cost about S$100 and ram 1Gb is S$28, web cam can’t add in, mini pci wifi card for broadcom brand it cost S$150++. think about it.
bc, benchmark data is for reference only. You have to feel it yourself. Anyway, dual core is better than single core. But it is only faster on those software that use 2 or more threads.

1) Mini-pci wifi new cost about RM334 (told by HP sales), I’ve installed 2nd hand bought from lelong.com.my cost RM110/pc (include delivery), I ordered 4pcs (3 Broadcom & 1 Intel) but unfortunately only 1pc works.
2) I would suggest the RM1399 (C778TU) as it has all those required hardware, unless u guys are willing to hunt for those hardware.
(for me I prefer the hard way so that I can learn and earn some pocket money with this knowledge) he.. he..

why my laptop keep on showing the blue light when plug in the power for charging even the battery is charged for long? Is there any sign to show the battery charging has completed? Other laptop charging light will change colour but this one keep on showing blue light……
You mean the round blue light that power cord plug in? It should be showing that notebook is powered.

chick, go to control panel, under the advanced tab, tick on the “Always show the icon on the taskbar” you will see the charging icon on the taskbar and when fully charged it will change to “On AC power”
battery finishing very fast because the wifi constantly ON when using windows_XP, the wifi light and switch become useless in windows xp
Chick, I checked with my girl friend. There are some lights on the left bottom of the notebook. One of it is the charging light.

So the wifi light always on but it shouldn’t drain the battery right? since no wifi card inside the laptop.
Nope. It just drain the battery for turning the WiFi light on.
the manual WiFi switch (constantly RED regardless WiFi is turned ON or OFF in windows xp) is the last piece of puzzle on presario notebooks running xp that’s left to be solved.
This problem in turn has now become ‘notebook thief’ friendly.
until then I am not going to leave the notebook in my car.
You should not leave notebook at car at all. The notebook thief can detect your notebook using the device even the notebook is not powered on. It is the battery that causing the issue. Not WiFi. My company notebook lost a lot due to it.
Hi all, for those which like to get online autoupdate, please install WinXP student edition (same like PRO edt). Genuine key being slipstream thus no cd key needed during installation. CPU-Z & GPU-Z are 2 cool tools that use to check your processor & display family

but from Intel Datasheet, GL960 only support for Celeron… Not too sure… I mailed Intel and they reply me rubbish, asking me to ask mother board manufacturer etc…

Jayce, I found some information that quite convincing that C749TU is GM965.
1. GM965 support both Celeron and Dual core and Core 2 duo
2. GM965 support “Dual Channel ” Ram
3. GM965 support 667Mhz Ram
4. GM965 support 4GB RAM
If GL960 is used in C749TU, maybe there is no possible that some one is using more than 2GB ram (detected), which we already have 1 case here.
In fact, all above feature were not supported by GL960 (or at least not written in datasheet).

GM965 support 533Mhz and 800Mhz as well.
Good news is, after I read about Pentium Dual Core, I’ve found that it is quite similiar with Core2Duo. Only differences is the FSB and the L1 L2 cache.
Hmm… That is the problem. Celeron and Dual Core is using 533 Mhz FSB while Core 2 Duo is using 800 Mhz FSB. So I cannot tell that C749TU is using GM965 and can support Core 2 Duo.

After you install Microsoft uAA driver, system will detect a new hardware which is sound hardware. Then install sound driver after that. Note – you need to use ‘have disk’ method to install sound and modem driver. Good luck.

Aren’t they suppose to know how to install drivers. Afterall, installing drivers is the most basic things we must master. If you duno how to install drivers then most probably you don’t know how to manage your PC / laptop. If those so call to be “IT” guys don’t know how to do, better learn to be a technician. Haha.

Nope. It is different from desktop RAM. Just ask for notebook memory PC667 DDR2. It works fine with 1GB + 512MB RAM (I am using it now).

Hie Guys, I’ve tested with Everest Ultimate.
Yup it is telling Intel GL960 chipset.
However, the latest version of intel chipset diagnostic (3.22)
still telling us that it is GM965 for both C749TU and C778TU (In order to test the chipset, I bought 1 Celeron and 1 Dual Core to testify for us).
The Intel Utility stated: Memory Controller:82GM965
My self believe is, Intel couldn’t be wrong with their own chipsets, right? maybe there’s only a slight different between GL960 and GM965 which Everest couldn’t differentiate? Anyway, if Intel is wrong, we can sue them. But not Everest right?

Again, according to wikipedia and Intel’s Datasheet, I strongly believe that GL960 only support DDR 533Mhz (Not 667Mhz) and only Celeron (Not Dual Core) processor.

One thing Everest shown about the Chipset is:
Support FSB533, 667 and 800Mhz……
so, only GM965 can do that… The economy version – GL960 will not possible to support FSB800Mhz for sure……
The FSB is the main difference between GM965 and GL960……

Again…this is back to the same question whether the lappy u guys bought are having which chipset (965 or 960). As I have stated in my previous reply, 965 will support up to FSB 800Mhz whereas 960 is 533Mhz. Kindly check your M.B FSB which i strongly believe those C700 which come with Celeron processor will not run up to 800Mhz. Those equip with core duo processor may reach 667Mhz (depending what processor you get). C’mon…be realistic, you will definately get lower end processor with a cheap price. How do you expect you can get a 965 chipset that can run up to 800Mhz under RM1500 right? This will happen in future but not at this moment. I’m not making any critics but i’m saying some sensible words.

W, just remove few screw at below the notebook with RAM sign , u will see all the detail in it. Max is 2GB. I still haven`t install OS yet. u need to install OS then follow by other drivers but I don`t know who tyo install OS on new PC. normal with OS I knew how to format lah. For development purpose, HP might use only 1 chipset motherboard for a common use between Celeron to Core2Duo processor.
Why I mean GM965 is possible here, is because although Everest Ultimate detect it as GL960, but at another detail, it stated that the M/B support FSB533, FSB667 and FSB800.
This is detected by Everest. Hence, if anything supported FSB800Mhz, it will not be GL960.

W, Yes just remove the RAM it imprinted on it. I removed it .Its PC2-5300 DDR2-RAM.Price in Singapore is SGD$29(RM63) for 1GB. I would suggest bring ur Notebook at the shop to install(Free installation).It`s have 2 slot so u can consider adding 1GB or buy 1GBx2 and sell ur 512MB.MAX is 2 GB

AFAIK, gOS rocket 2.0 has WINE built-in and is able to run MS OFFICE 2003, which is fine since this is the version my wife is using anyway

by the way, I have tried to run ubuntu 7.10 live CD on the notebook. Everything works including wireless USB stick and sound card. Very fast too.
The notebook seem solid enuf and for the kind of price I pay, I can’t complain, can I?

Rrgd to your query, answer is “yes”. GL960 can support up 2 Core2Duo processor but only limited to a few model (T5200 & T5300) which I think current laptops doesn’t come ship with them anymore. So most probably those laptop that power with Core2Duo are running with a GM / PM 965.

C700 not only support until T5 series but even T7100 series (FSB 800Mhz) Core2Duo processor. Refer to the file below:

However, I’ve found that the Motherboard used in C700 is 30D9 (by using any diagnostic software will tell you) from HP. Google it and you’ll see other posted forum regarding what chipset the motherboard is using.

Yes. I’m quite satisfy with C700. Fortunately we are able to get this below market value. Even during PC fair for a Celeron there’s still about the price of more than RM1500.
So the actual market value laptop we get is about RM1500 above. Congrat everyone who own this laptop.
And if anyone’s warranty is over (mine is 3 years) after 1 year, open it, and there’s a possible to upgrade to Core2Duo 800Mhz then……

I’ve finish installing all the drivers for C778TU. Overall same as C749TU except the Wifi driver which is Atheros mini pci card.
Everything works fine (even the webcam) but having no time to test the benchmarking.

What the USB wireless adapter prizes? Is it having two type of speed 54M and 125M? Anyone know about this???
1GB RAM should be around RM60 right now. USB wireless adapter is around RM50 for 54M version. 125M version speed is faster but your wireless router also need to support 125M. For Streamyx, 54M will do the work fine.
What brand of USB wireless adapter you using? Just now survey at computer shop, the cheapest one also RM65.

About the RAM which one better? Kingstom or apacer??
I am using ProLink USB wireless adapter. The price differ from place to place.
Both Kingston and Apacer is OK. But I prefer Kingston personally.

I manage to install wireless driver. However the button doesn’t seems working. I not yet test the wireless lan. Will try this weekend. The no connection appear at the bottom. So I assume the driver is working.
This is the way to install SATA NATIVE:
At Device Manager, click IDE ATA
then update driver
then install from a list
select file below:
C:\swsetup\SP38088\Files\32\iaahci.inf
Then Choose 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI.
Then reboot. Remember to set SATA NATIVE back to Enable at BIOS.

For those of you who are trying out linux ubuntu, I would like to say while ubuntu 7.10 works well, Compiz will not work since the compaq is using an intel x3100 chipset. And because compiz is not working, AWN dock is not working. It is also not possible to enable special effects in the ubuntu appearance settings.
But the good news is that ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron was released on 24th Apr 08 and I have installed it and all sort of settings now work! I can now install AWN dock and compiz work, the elastic band effect of moving a window works great!
Now who says the celeron compaq notebook is a low end notebook
I am impressed with ubuntu 8.04 so far but I am even more happier with the RM799 notebook!!

Just went to digital mall section 14 to get the 1GB ram. All-IT selling at RM 70 for kingston (they don’t have other brands) and AONE-PLUS selling at RM65. So the deal went to Aone-plus.
The guy there is kind enuf to help me to install the ram but he accidentally pop in a 2GB ram and both of us did not realise that. When I boot up ubuntu at the shop, I noticed that the system monitor indicated 2.5GB of ram!! I thought 2GB is the maximum this notebook can handle? Apparently I was wrong. Anyway, the guy changed back to 1GB after this

I have just rcv the Notebook and successfully installed Windows XP by Disable the Native Mode in the BIOS setting (Though I also know how to install with it Enable (but most of us do not have USB Floppy Drive, right)? If you want to switch back to SATA Native mode, just download and install sp32492.exe and switch back to Native Mode.
Also, have to let you guys know that my experience, I have a spare BroadCom Mini PCI card but it seems not compatible with this machine, I will try later to try my Intel Pro Wiress from my Gateway Notebook later and let you know the result. Anyway, the Antenna cable is there.

If anyone try to find USB Wireless cheaper, I can get it at RM40
there is a way to install winxp with sata enable w/o using usb floppy, instead u can use Usb thumbdrive which comes with 2 drives (eg. Pendrive). jus copy the sata driver to the 1st drive (A/B in the case of “Pendrive”), during installation of winxp, press F6 to install the sata driver.
alternatively, u can modify the winxp cd so it does not require to press any F6 to install sata driver… i have discuss at c749tu page.
but most modified xp sp3 from torrent are modified version, so save u time to figure out how. i know cause i learnt the HARD way

Please read my previos post(384). When you execute Sp38088.exe it will create a folder at C: . However this will not install the driver automatically.
Instead, you need to reinstall your IDE ATA and follow my post at 384. If you’ve install the modem and soundcard, you’ll know this step also. Click “Have a disk” then point to C:\swsetup\SP38088\Files\32\iaahci.inf
The only reason which we can’t use the “normal” way to install SATA Native driver is because our BIOS is set at SATA Native Disable. So Windows couldn’t detect it.
But if you enable it before installing SATA Driver, you’ll be hang before arrive Windows platform.

2. per my friend, u can set sata enabled before installing xp provided your xp is the latest version. I have got myself a copy. Will try again today. My XP disc labelled as XP Pro SP3 V2 VLM with WGA Integrated Dec 2007. Hope it works.
I think that’s the price we need to pay for buying cheap pc. However, I find it good as I learnt something.

Over this forum, I think most of us are talking about the Celeron Model, so I want to make something clear to all of you (since I have been in IT line more then 15 Years):
1. SATA Native Mode enable or disable will not make any noticeable dereferences in HDD speed, since we are not running intensive software (or else you won’t use Celeron to do the task anyway).
2. Forget about Dual-channel RAM, Celeron can’t take advantage over dual channel RAM, so I suggest all of you to get additional 1GB to add so get the total of 1.5GB, and it is more more then enough to run Windows XP.

Totally agree with Mertz point of view. Not sure which Celeron family C700 series have. Celeron M? Celeron? or Celeron Dual Core? I think now is the dawn of Quad Core era. Dual core is the mainstream. Single core is out of the competition. Still not much application which can utilized multi-thread technology but definately most modern software need a lot of L2 cache to run smoothly. This is to say, if you run XP, Office 2003, WMP, surfing & A.V/firewall at the background concurrently, most probably will feel the sting unless you are equip with 1-1.5 GB RAM. Those who hope to run VMware workstation/server on their lappy better get a 2GB RAM

One good news! I have tested the 777TU with Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG and it’s worked. You can find it from any IT shop in Lowyatt, or online. Cost bellow RM150. Signal seems quite good with this card install in 777TU.

Btw, Intel Celeron never have Dual or Quad core, that’s their marketing strategy, but overall, this Celeron should be Celeron 500 series which is comparable to Intel Centrino E2000 series in 64-bit execution and most of the commonly used features, only some of the feature being cut-off, L2 cache is 1MB (if it is really 500 series), same cache size for Core2Duo E2000 series.
For this Celeron 500, I will say, it is even much faster then Pentium 4 at the same clock speed, if you don’t believe, do some benchmarking.
So, this machine is not for POOR MAN lahhhhh…. still good for designing and CAD. Just need to add additional RAM to get it run more task (Even HT or Dual core need more memory to execute more program, right)?
Intel has dual core on Celeron series now. Check on Intel website for more info.
Pentium 4 is the worst CPU that Intel ever built. Even my Pentium M 866Mhz outperforms Pentium 4 1.6Ghz.

I have just checked the 777TU, it is same spec as E2xxx Core2Duo except it is single core. Means it is core solo? Even faster then Pentium M

mertz is right. M series celeron uses conroe-l technology from core2duo. to be honest, celeron M5XX is faster than petium M (centrino series) at equal speed comparison.
the down side is power comsumption. my notebook only stay at home so there is no downside for me
i suppose u can find lots of cheap usb wireless stick in digital mall. But I bought a belkin for RM120 or so. cant remember its exact price liao. Works great so far!!

Btw, on my study on CPU since Pentium series, I knew that Intel seldom produce different CPU on different production line, example: when Pentium II time, Intel produce P2-233 to P2-300 in the same line, grade them in category and lock the frequency, that’s where the “remark” CPU came from after someone realized that. Same thing here, this Celeron 500 series should be the same production line as Core2Duo E2xxx series, maybe one of the core is not running well, so they disable the dual core to run it at single core.
I have tested my desktop in the office with some utility software and it seems like all functions/features are the same as Celeron 500 we have here, the only different is one is single core and one is dual core….. MARKETING STRATEGY again….. As Intel don’t want to give the cake to AMD’s lower end CPU…
I am quite satisfy with the 777TU, it is much more then enough for normal task (though it has no VT technology for Virtual Server). But at least it support IA64, SSE1, SSE2, SSE3 (but not SSE4), 1MB L2 Cache (all same as Core2Duo E2xxx).

raider, I have the same problem, but my DV has an USB port, so problem solved. Since this notebook has no PC Card slot, I can’t find any solution if your’s really need Firewire.

I have a crazy fren who owns a V3000 series dual core. Then within 1 year sell off to get Dell Vostro 13″.
His laptop sold at RM750 only. This what we call: Gadget Freak!
Sometimes ppl don’t know that actually Celeron Processor for this model is a 64Bit processor.
And if you study Electronic Engineering course, you will understand that most of the same series processor (Merom etc. ) have the very similar design. Only different is upgrade some feature (sometimes is the software/firmware different) which makes them different.
And the constraint for interfacing between processor will certainly waste the ability of a advance excellent processing power……

I am totally agree with what Jayce, Kaktong… said. I have a friend who was in IT line but no longer updated his knowledge in IT, so I mentioned this notebook, guess what is his response? WHAT? CELERON? SO OUTDATED!
I am really sad that IT people don’t even know this machine is even much powerful then Pentium M, it is just something like Dual Core E2160 (ofcoz different Freq) with single processor. So…. it is as powerful as Core 2 Duo except it has only single core!

Anyway, regarding S-Video, you can use the traditional 4 pin connector for this model.
This model although comes in 7 pin S-Video slot, it can be commonly use with traditional S-Video cable.

I need wifi but I think just get an USB adapter will be just fine. Has anyone try to connect the S-video output to TV? Hope to watch some movies using the pc to play RMVB file.

There should be a keyboard shortcut key to enable back it. Something like button Fn + wireless. Press these 2 buttons together.

Whenever I play music, i do not have any problem, even when i turn on the SRS Wow Effect, it sounds OK.
But when the Graphic Equaliser is turned ON, and bass ramped up slightly, the sound become very distorted. This is the same whether i use the built-in speaker or a plugged in headphone.
Can someone verify if you have the same issue and how to solve this problem? I need to verify if this is a software or hardware issue, so that I can send it in to HP to fix if a hardware problem before warranty expires.
What scheme did you use in Graphic Equaliser? Rock? Custom? The sound sure will be distorted if you pull the bar too high.
I use custom equaliser. Bass is somewhere between mid-point and highest level. SRS Wow turned ON with default setting).
The distortion is quite bad.

I’m not sure whether the S-Video to RCA method works for all laptops or all TVs or not.
If I’m not mistaken, I have experience that it doesn’t work (samsung TV quite new without S-Video).
Maybe you can try with other laptops and see?
Else just get a LCD tv with S-VIDEO! HEHE!
