McAfee antivirus software makes my Windows Vista Ultimate crashes. My Windows does not work properly lately. All of the applications that I use starting to crash after several minutes. It crashes when using Firefox, XunLei, or should I say most of the applications in my computer. The applications crashes first, then follow by Windows Vista Ultimate itself hang forever…
The first thing that I can think of… My computer was infected with virus. Why? The symptom above only happen when I am connected to Internet. No issue when I am in offline more. However, who can survive without Internet nowadays? Not for me. I need to get connected almost everyday. Unless I went to vacation. Okay, back to the story. McAfee antivirus software that I use is McAfee Homeware Program which was provided free from my company. It served me for 3 months without issues. However, it just not behaved very well these few days.
The crashing symptom disappeared after I uninstalled McAfee antivirus and installed AVG Free antivirus software. Hmm… Is McAfee antivirus software really causing the problem? I am not sure. But by looking on the data that I don’t have crashing issue now, it does look like McAfee antivirus software has something to do with it.
I will use AVG Free antivirus software from now on. Hopefully, it does not have issue like McAfee antivirus software.
What kind of antivirus software are you using?
As an IT worker, i believe all antivirus will eventually slow down / cause problems to your rig. Reason : every “good” antivirus will installed it’s own filtering system driver in between Kernel Mode and File System. For every file I/O operation, the Antivirus file system filter driver invokes itself and checks the file (integrity, suspicious file etc) before it can allow application/service to access the file. That’s where all ‘hell issues’ break out if the A.V system driver is buggy.
For me, i don’t use any A.V. (my 2 cents)
Try this avira antivir. I am using this. OK. Less resourses usage. Not bad. Can update file from net.
@Aaron: I also wish that I no need to use antivirus software. But Windows is too weak to walk alone in the Internet world.
I use 3 types of antivirus software. First one is BitDefender for home notebook used. Second one is AVG for my wife notebook and TrendMicro for my office PC. So far, these three are working quite good and not causing any problem to me. Anyway, in my opinion I think BitDefender is the best antivirus software among them.

I have Window’s Vista, and McAfee came with the computer. The same thing happened to me. It worked for a while, but a few months in, my computer would Blue Screen everytime my computer would connect to the internet, or try. I had no idea that was going on. Eventually, I got it in my head to uninstall McAfee. That did the trick. I have a couple virus’ now, and I’ve looked on the Windows Vista website to try to find another virus protector… I tried Panda and another one (something futuristic looking… don’t remember the name) and they both did the same thing, but it didn’t take a couple months. I actually found this blog trying to find something that DIDN’T make my computer crash… I’ve only had it 4 months, and this is rediculous…
Windows Vista is good but it can hog your CPU and Memory.,,:
We have prepared a list of the top ten antivirus software and according to my research, Norton antivirus 2010 outperformed all other antivirus software. However, for Windows Vista computers, I recommend ESET Nod32 antivirus 4 because it is pretty fast antivirus. I use ESET Nod32 on my Vista computer but on the laptop with Windows 7, I use Norton.
