I was busying with setup a new computer system for my girl friend who is a graphics designer. What does a graphics designer computer system requires? A fast processing power, big LCD monitor with better colour and viewing angle… Most of all, we need it as affordable as possible. And can get all the PC components at local PC store. Component selection is kinda limited at my small town. Anyway, I came out a list and helped her assembled it.
Mid range computer system for graphics designer
CPU – Intel Core i7-2600
Motherboard – Asus P8H67-M LE
RAM – 4GB Kingston KVR1333 DDR3
Hard Drive – 1TB WD Caviar Blue 32M 6Gb/s
Optical Drive – Liteon 24x IHAS324-32 SATA
Power Supply – Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 350W
Case – Cooler Master Elite 371
Input – Logitech K120 Keyboard & Logitech M305 Wireless Mouse
Display – Dell UltraSharp U2311H
Speakers – Sonic Gear Morro 210
Others – APC 500VA BE500R-AS UPS
No dedicated display card on this system because 3D gaming is not required for office use. Else I would have to use a more powerful power supply and add a better 3D display card. And the total cost will be higher…

I was told if you need to run some CAD software, then you need a very good graphics card for the drawings.
If it is a laptop, for example, you need a high range Dell Precision. Even a Latitude is not good enough and will be slow.
Yes, CAD needs lot of 3D processing power. But my girl friend only use Photoshop which use 2D most of the time.
dude try http://www.tigerdirect.com they are awsome and save so much money with no taxes on any shipping i use them all the time when building a server brain to support gamers call of duty and massive games. so give it a look at
I thought Mac is the best choice for all those graphic designer?
Yes, but you need to pay double or triple in price for iMac. Of course, iMac quality is better too.

get a powerbook + external monitor ~ really simple setup
If your gf usually editing huge photoshop file, must consider below part:

Your monitor is good enough. IPS is a must.
