Which window tinting to choose in Malaysia? V-KOOL, 3M, Hüper Optik, LLumar…

There are a lot of window films in Malaysia. Brands like V-KOOL, 3M, Hüper Optik, LLumar, ECOTINT, Solar Gard, Air Cool, Armorcoat… However, which car tinting to choose is the question that I am facing right now. I did some researches online. And narrow down into 4 popular brands ~ V-KOOL, 3M, Hüper Optik and LLumar.

Window tint level

Window Film Glossary

Visible Light Transmission (VLT)
– The percent of total visible light that is transmitted through the window film/glass system. The lower the number the less visible light transmitted.

InfraRed (IR) Rejection
– Infrared light form the sun is only a portion of the solar spectrum which provides heat through a window. It is important not to confuse IR Rejection with TSER (total solar energy rejection) which is the true indicator of how much energy will be blocked from entering your building.

UltraViolet (UV) Rejection
– Indicates the amount of ultraviolet (UV) energy that is blocked from passing through the glass. UltraViolet is Light having a shorter wavelength and higher energy than visible light. Ultraviolet light is potentially damaging to library, archive and museum objects. Removing UV light can reduce the rate of deterioration. Certain acrylic sheets have UV filtering chemicals built into them.

Total Solar Energy Rejected (TSER)
– The percent of total solar energy (heat) rejected by the window film/glass system. The higher the number, the more total solar energy (heat) rejected.

Visible Light Reflectance (VLR)
– The percent of total visible light that is reflected by the window film/glass system. The lower the number the less visible light reflected.

Which window film to choose at Malaysia? Based on JPJ Malaysia Installation of Tinted Glass Rules, front windscreen should permit not less than 70% light transmission, while the back windscreen and side windows should permit not less than 50% light transmission. Most of the car windows block certain amount of light already. Therefore, when adding with window film, it might not pass JPJ guideline. And most of window film manufacturers do not cover / pay JPJ summon but sales agent says yes on marketing tactics. Do take note on that.

Total Solar Energy Rejected (TSER) is the most important factor to block heat from sun. The higher TSER == the better it will reduce heat. Another factor to consider ~ security. There are certain window films provide security feature with thicker film (from 4 mil to 8 mil). Select wisely on which type of tinting that match your need.

By the way, some of the window films are not SmartTAG and GPS friendly. Do check it with sales agent before install it on your car.

So which window tinting to choose in Malaysia?

I have already V-Kool installed but it is very thin. The other day somebody just broke the whole side window with a small hammer.
Is it possible to put a thicker film of Cool-Armor on top of the V-Cool film – which seems to be quite over priced.

  • steve

I am very very dissappointed with V-Kool tinted film for the reason because there are too many imitation V-Kool in the market and even the well known supplier also supply fake one. Nobody can tell which is genuine and which is imitation. So to be safe better buy other brands like 3M, Cooltech, Rike Cool which are better value for money lah. I learn my lesson by paying the most expensive price and getting the imitation one because who can tell which is genuine and which is not. Furthermore, before they put on it is genuine and after you collect your car it is not, then what to argue after job done? Good lesson learnt.

my car was tinted with solar guard supplied by the v-kool.
within 3 yrs it began to peel off from the screen.
i claimed for warranty at v-kool HQ in pj and all replaced with a new solar guard film.
less than two years all window tints began to show wrinkle, and the film dye fading with stains of metal rust-look.

PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT GO TO 3M PUCHONG NEAR IOI MALL. I can’t explain everything here. I did my car tinted over there. They quot extremely expensive and they are not professional at all, I have experiences a very bad services there. After I have received my car, they don’t even clean my car, and what a mess ??? they dirty all my seat cushion. Make me so troublesome. I am so heartbroken with my new car. So please be careful with this 3M AUTO FILM IN PUCHONG GUYSSSS!!! I’m sure you can get better than this bullshit.

Jayce, u used c60 all round? what about front and back?
    3m sales rep recommende c70 or C60 (f) and c50(sides and back). i figure c50 a bit risky
although jpj regulated min vlt is 50% for sides n back as the glass itself takes away so lights. unless 100% clear glass. i have seen c70, c50 combo ..such a beau within permitted range. however i thinking whether i should go for c70/c50 or c70/c60. aesthetic wise is c60 dark enuf to be nice to look. my firstpriority is to max heatrejection . tser for c60 is also lower than 50 lah (x5) :o( . btw i have beingdoing mu research on 3m, illumar, huberoptik a d vkool. very likely to take up 3m cystal line.

    • http://www.jayceooi.com Jayce Ooi

Yes, all windows are 60 if not mistaken.

  • jeremy

@speaker: thanks for caution. but i hope this is not a prank or an act of sabotage becos i was there yesterday enquiring throughout (for over 4hours).salesgals was ery curteous and helpful. she even call me back to see the finish work of c70/c50 combo. this branch is near or opposite ioi mall.

  • jeremy

Jacye Ooi, how is c60 heat rejection like?

    • http://www.jayceooi.com Jayce Ooi

Hard to tell because I don’t have other type to compare. But it is working fine to me.

I just got my Mazda tint in Raytech Puchong last week. I find the quality is ok so far. The sales person, Mr Yau, give me a very good explanation and make me confident with the brand. I just share some information with everybody, to make sure those product you guys buying is original.Normally it come with nice original packaging box (not empty one) and there is logo printed on the film itself. I saw this before in my friend’s car, he tinted 3M, and i remember that is the 3M logo on his tinted window. Be careful with those window film no logo, means not original.

Any one heard of Agard? Quite expensive though, thinking of use their film but i doubt. Please help.

depends on how much u are wiiling to pay for the car glass tinting. Among the best, after 14 years and also a number of cars I would recommend V Kool. Protects ur eyes and also the interior of the car… priceless. get it from the principle suppliers, not the dealers. cost rm3000 for the whole car. some dealers offer RM 600 for the whole car. can’t be original right :). don’t about the cheaper brands. did try one before. paid RM 1800 but it was rubbish compared to V Kool.

  • Nasron

**** don’t know about cheaper brands….. I installed the basic 99% UV and ultrared reflection. there are security and light reduction models

Hi, Im getting a new car and want to apply windows tint, I know so far V-Kool was the hot topic in the market but come with many imitate brand, another problem that I worry about was the metal components that consist in the tint was another issue that later will peel off and rusted on the windows(that I most worry about), I had try 3M for my previous car but is not smart tag friendly, Im thinking of Raytech now, any suggestion?

    • http://www.jayceooi.com Jayce Ooi

Sorry KC, didn’t use RayTech before. No idea…
