Prerequisites
- Windows Phone 7 build 7004 XBmod-Yuki ROM v2
- Zune Software (link)
- WP7 Update Cab Sender
Do make sure that you have the exact Windows Phone 7 version ~ XBmod-Yuki ROM v2 (build 7004). Follow below guide to install if you don’t have it yet. WP7 Update Cab Sender is a batch program to install cab to your WP7 HTC HD2.
Step by Step Guide
- Make sure that you have the exact Windows Phone 7 version ~ XBmod-Yuki ROM v2 (build 7004).
- Connect USB cable from PC to phone.
- At PC, enter WP7-Update-Cab-Sender folder.
- Go to ‘if needed install this tool’ folder.
- Install Setup-UpdateWP (x64 for 64 bits Windows and x86 for 32 bits Windows).
- Copy DeviceProvisioning.cab to WP7-Update-Cab-Sender folder.
- Run WP7 Update Cab Sender.bat.
- Then type S – (S)end Cabs to device.
- After finished installation, close WP7 Update Cab Sender.
- Delete DeviceProvisioning.cab then.
- Open WP7-7004-7720-Patch.zip.
- Copy all the cab files to WP7-Update-Cab-Sender folder.
- Run WP7 Update Cab Sender.bat again.
- As usual, type S – (S)end Cabs to device.
- This will upgrade WP7 from 7004 to 7720. Note – it took 2 hours in my case.
- When installation finished, disconnect USB cable from phone.
- Go to Settings.
- Then about. You should see 7720 build here.
- Select reset your phone.
- Then yes and yes…
- Phone will be rebooted then.
- Follow onscreen instructions to setup Windows Phone 7.5 settings.
- That’s all.

For Windows 7, you can see it in system property. Not sure about Windows XP.
As for cab sender – download this patch http://file.jayceooi.com/2011/09/WP7-Cab-Sender-WinXP.zip and overwrite WP7 Update Cab Sender.bat.

No to install stock WinMo. But you need to have the prerequisites.

Look like the .Net Framework version is not matched. Which version are you using now? Or you can try to upgrade to the latest version.

I am finding that a lot of problems stem from the sd card. You might try using another card.
When I went to step 8, my device restarted to screen ‘quietly brilliant’ and hang on.
If I release battery and restart, system error: ‘Update device c59……couldn’t be in time’.

First off Jayce, you are amazing. Second, I got through the whole process flawlessly but when checking the “about” page to verify the OS version it says 7661.WP7_5_Trial. That doesn’t seem correct based on your video. Thanks for your help!
Err… I have no idea too. I installed WP7 7720 twice. And both of the installations are working properly. You might want to restart the whole process again from 7004. And make sure that you are using the correct files.
Started over installing 7004. I get to step 9 during the 7720 update, but when the phone restarts it freezes after windows boots. I’ve tried starting over at 7004 multiple times but keeps freezing after windows is booted after step 9.

Ok the issue with the freezing was the microsd. But I have cone through the whole process of 7004 using your guide, then updating to 7720 (downloading everything via your links) and it keeps coming out at os version 7661.WP7_5_Trial. Bummer

I had the same 7661 version problem. Resolved in the following way – though I don’t get a clean termination on the cab sender, but the phone says the update was complete and the version is stated as the 7720 version, the phone appears to be working OK.
Get to the 7661 point, then clear out from the PC’s cab sender directory those cabs that are not referring to 7720 in their name (they start with a capital D, which I’m guessing is how they’re making those cabs the last to be sent and installed – latest alphabetically). Run the batch file again. It goes through another installation, resulting in 7720.

i get the error at the step number 8, when the .cab file should be installed on my phone. instead of doing it, i get a previously written error. but no matter which .cab file i want to install on my phone, none of them work.

the only two differences i’ve found are first, i have WM7 version 7008 and not 7004, i don’t think i can downgrade my phone 7004. if i can please tell me how.
the second difference is that i don’t have htc hd7, but lg lg-e900. could really this be an issue?

I have followed every single step and installed 7004…
Installed deviceprovisioning without problem, and when I copied all the CABs from “WP7-7004-7720-Patch” and run the “WP7 Update Cab Sender.bat”.
It installs the update with following status:

When the phone restarts it get stuck with the picture of a mobile phone with usb cable + computer.
I have to pull the cable out and remove the battery and restarts..

I got this freeze issue too. It was caused by my expired SIM card. Solved after changed to active SIM card.

Yes, i installed Zune because the “WP7 Update Cab Sender” wouldn’t let me continue the process without it, in fact, the message appeared after installing Zune.
Problem solved…
While installing Zune i had to replace “PortableDeviceApi.dll” (as directed in this site: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/zune/forum/zune_install-pc/zune-47-cant-install-device-update-didnt-install/b3f23662-d90a-4ddd-90e6-72cfc3bee69c?page=1) because i was getting an error that didn’t let me continue the process (Windows 7 portable device update) then after installing Zune i simply copied the old “PortableDeviceApi.dll” in “C:\Windows\System32” again and voila! the “Error: No devices were found.” is gone.

I just upgraded my HD2’s XBMOD-Yuki ROM v2 from 7004 to 7720 last night using steps from XDA. Just found that you have the steps all neatly done here in your site. I have one problem though, I cannot access Windows Live and need activation. I tried the Chevron update but it complains that it cannot establish a connection with my phone (even if it is connected with Zune running in the back) So I figured Chevron is not needed because Yuki’s ROM would have this unlocked already. Is that right?
So any ideas how to get Windows Live working? I was able to unlock it before the update to Mango, but now it asks for the Activation Codes.

Did try that and they mentioned that they will provide the activation code once I email them a photo of my phone with my phone number on the photo as well. :O I’m suspicious about their request as this “evidence” may be used against me 🙁 Not sure if this Mango release by XDA is legal.
Try US Microsoft online chat, i live in Poland and they gave me activation code in 3 minutes. I just had to give them my name, telephone number, email (gave real information) and phone manufacturer (only HTC, didn’t say it was HD2).
got my activation codes. weee! by the way, noticed any problems on the Mango 7720 build? I cannot seem to get Bluetooth to work properly, the ringer and otification sounds are rather loud and my battery drains quite fast. I found myself almost always recharging the phone. Any ideas?
Jayce I really need your help on this, my device (HTC HD2) Jeeps freezing everytime I power it up, I’ve tried resetting it and also Hard resetting from the boot menu, my Pc can’t pick it up either? Also it can’t find the update files on step 9!:(

Dear Jayce, thanks for your hard work and kindness share with this rom, but I found a problem during this update process, every time when I click WP7 Update Cab Sender.bat, the system cannot show the right window, instead it shows some kind of words like it’s not internal or external command and keep asking me to push any key, could you please help me with this problem? I did install ”if needed install this tool” and tried to use English version win7 OS for udpate, still in vain..
Make sure that your Windows language system locale is English.
Man please help me I’m tripping out – when I get to step 9 and start the cab installation (after pressing S and all) it reports an error (phone update agent error) the preinstallation update package (or super package) isn’t valid, and then it stops.

On my Windows 7 64 bit version i could upgrad to 7004 to 7392.. but from 7392 to 7720 I got several errors.. seldom I have tried atleast 10 times.. by erasing everything and started from the beginning.
After several times of failures/errors.. I thought to try on my other laptop, which is running the Developer Preview of the upcoming Windows 8 32 bit…

There is some problem in step 8, the device restart (so many times).
Then I added:
– HD2-First Flash-Splash
– Before installing Magldr, to install WM6.5
Then everything was OK
HSPL> HD2-First-Splash> Radio> WM6.5> MAGLDR >……

The reason is that a phone HD7 bought on Ebay but no code.
After a few minutes and after providing personal information (not necessarily in the USA) will be code. If that fails, it can be several times.
How do I go back to stock Rom wm6.5 from wp7″mango” 7720 ? Is it the same old process as flashing stock Rom when in bootloader or am missing something? The hd2 wp7 Q&A says task 29 bricks the hd2 because we use last 24 nand pls advice. I need to know safest way to get to stock rom without bricking my hd2.
Good question. Personally, I did not test to restore back to Windows Mobile 6.5. But I did flash back to several Android ROMs. And they are all working fine.
By the way, I never use Task 29 on my HTC HD2 at all. Did the HD2 WP7 Q&A teach how to restore back to Windows Mobile 6.5?
No, there’s no guide getting back to stock rom. So what next, restoring to stock rom 6.5 through bootloader (tricolour screen) and hoping it doesn’t get bricked or try nand android like you said and then flash back to wm 6.5. Thanks in advance for reply.

i love this rom and been using it for 2 weeks but the in-call and speakerphone are very very low and its very inconvenient when making calls!
I looked everywhere on xda-developers and there doesn’t seem to be any fix for it. I even tried all the Registry Key edits posted on there (e.g. MaxUICallVolume increase did not work at all!) among others.

Just load MAGLDR. Then install Android or start WP7 installation again.

Make sure the usb cable isn’t plugged in at startup. That can cause freezes sometimes.
As for trouble updating the os, I found that taking out the sd card before installing the smaller updates will lead to success.

I had no problem to go back 7004 from 7720 during my testing. And loaded Android on it now.

Isn’t this amazing. I believe the internal memory should be around 500MB. I hope I am not bothering you much on that.
The WP7 OS also needs disk space to store, right? Put in SD card will give you more storage.

ive tried and already updated successfully.
there are some issue i found out.
1) compass ability is gone.
2) Wp7.5 IE 9 lost ability in those “IE only website” such as corporate banking and some web based system. usable on 7.0.7 but unusable in 7720. still cant figure out.
3) battery life is worser than 7.0.7
4) unable to link to zune, ive tried to do the SD unlock, it just corrupt my whole SD and my phone fail to detect the SD claiming its faulty. ( delete partition and format to FAT32 primary) = have to reinstall the whole thing again…but this time faster. =x

I installed WP7 7004 as per your guide. Phone works well, but cannot use any SD card inserted =free space some 20MB :-((( I tried to insert 2GB, 16GB and 32GB Kingston or Sundisk. I tried to used the card after windows reset but without success. I installed the Storagelock, but application says “The storage card is currently unlocked. Do you want to lock it?” But after yes => “Failed toggling card lock”.
I formated the card before with EASEUS Partition Master 9.1.0 Home Edition to one partition FAT32. But the same is if partition is deleted. Any idea how to handle it? I think I should format the card any other way?

I just put the SD card in then hard reset WP7. WP7 will use the SD card after that.

So understand it – 1./ insert SD card (no matter formatted/unformatted) 2./ Go to settings about, “reset your phone”; 3./ after system reboot – the card should be used/formatted automatically by WP7 and available e.g. settings “total-available storage”, where I’ll see total space (some GB’s).

I found on MS web pages. WP7 is extremely sensitive to SD card type. I bought 4 kinds/brands of CD cards. It worked with Sandisk 8GB SDHC, speed (4). There might be some WP7 certified microSD cards, but couldn’t buy any.
I am still trapped in the step 8, phone restarts, display irresponsibe. Nevertheless WP7UpdateCabSender says “…Device has been updated….DONE…any key…” I even did the whole process from installing again SPL-2.08.HSPL; Radio v2.15 ROM; MAGLDR v1.13; Windows Phone 7 build 7004 XBmod-Yuki ROM v2 and Windows Phone 7.5 Mango 7720 on HTC HD2. But the same result.. After hard reset system starts only without SD card – so cannot proceed with steps 14-15… :-((
I also found that WP7 gets frozen after any restart. If I install “Windows Phone 7 build 7004 XBmod-Yuki ROM v2” works fine incl. SD card, this could be even 1 day. After one restart it stays frozen….

You’ll get everything when you dial a number of Microsoft support and choose an option to speak with operater. Then tell that you have HTC HD7! NOT MANGO or HD2! And give them your Live ID and your First and Last name. And they will give you all codes. 🙂
Hi, I followed all the steps and installed the original Windows 7 on my phone.
The initial set up went okay. However, when I restart the phone, it gets STUCK on the “enter SIM pin” screen, and I am not allowed to enter any digits. Phone is non responsive. I took out the battery and tried again, and again the same thing happened. Please help.

Try to disable the SIM pin with other phone. Then put it back to your HD2.
I had same problem over and over and over. Nothing helps. Only thing you can do to fix this is to flash DWI and when he load Home screen install cab package 7004-7720 update. That’s an update for 7.5. Just install it and there will not be stuck any more. 😉 But you have to do it right away. If u restart it, it will stuck.

All I mean is to flash it again, from the start. 🙂 Task 29 to erase all, magdlr and then Yuki xb Rom. And when it comes to Home screen, connect it with PC, turn of Zune and apply updates through cab sender. 🙂

This is how I unlocked my cards.
1.Install DWI fresh HD2 to Main Memory
2.Install Unlock Cab
3.Go to Settings/ About/ Reset
4.Put SD card into phone.
5.Go again to Settings/ About/ Reset (should only take 5mins)
6.Unlock card using Storage app you just install
7.Reboot phone got to SD card in Magld and it should show 199mb on your PC.

And OFC, then you have to format it and use some program as Mini Partition Tool to erase memory and make a new one: Primary Fat32 should be just fine

I did not update using Zune. No idea.
Go to About/Reset, whait to load your Home screen and then connect your phone with Zune, click on install later when asks. In Zune go to Settings/Phone and find Reserved space and increase it to 50 %. And then run update. 🙂
When Update is finished, you can turn back Reserved space to 5-9%.

I followed all your instructions and managed till having Windows Phone 7 build 7004 XBmod-Yuki ROM v2 on my HD2. Then i installed Zune on my pc first and then connected my mobile with laptop .Zune said that some updates r available for my phone. I started updating my phone through Zune. It stuck at 9 out of 10 process where it was supposed to restart the phone. It restarted the phone successfully but the Zune never reached 10 out of 10th process. So i disconnected the phone after waiting for ages and started the process for updating of WP7 mango version on my phone. After copying
Copy DeviceProvisioning.cab to WP7-Update-Cab-Sender folder.
Run WP7 Update Cab Sender.bat. It could not do it successfully and eventually i ended up with bad disc on my sd card. I tried your way of unlocking it via DevUnlock and then formatting my sdformatter as well as Mini utility tool as adviced in your other blog but no luck. It just shows bad disc on Partition Utility tool and does not let me do anything.
Please advice how can i fix my sd card.

No …it shows the F drive as Removal Storage but when i click on it ..it does not respond and simply hangs …
I mean in your WP7 phone.
My phone does not start at all when i put the SD card in it. It just hangs while booting.
But phone works fine when i remove the card and start the phone without it.

Once in fact, it booted up and i tried to unlock it but it says that it is already unlocked and asked to lock it. I tried locking it but it simply says the unlock toggling failed and it neither locked or unlocked the card.

I could not manage to unlock/lock it at all. I tried the reset by going into settings and then to about phone and then to reset the phone. I assume this is called “Hard reset”. Let me know if there is any other way to hard reset it?

I was doing update on my HD2 and during Zune update it was taking too long (during phone reboot), and i tried to restart the update but since then it wouldnt recognize the phone. I then during trying to fix this deleted the drivers used. Now i cannot get my windows 7 pc to recognise the phone connected at all.
Is there anywhere you know i can get the windows 7 drivers for hd2.
I have tried through windows and HTC websites, couldnt get them i didnt think it would be that hard…
now because windows doesnt recognise the device connected, it just doesnt do anything when i connect my phone.. doesnt even charge it. can you find some drivers for me ?

I managed to get it to work with reinstalling Zune. But my SD card wasnt working and when i tried to update to 7392 from windows phone 7 i had the same problem as Ashok mentioned above in a loop of windows mobile 7 booting but saying SD card was not correctly formatted. Could not boot with or without the SD card inserted, and hard resetting the phone and setting to default windows didnt help. Not booting windows and with these lines in bootloader.

I got the same OS version also! Can it be because I started with the original WM 6.5, then I installed the files and windows phone 7 in the other guide and then installing the files from this guide and without doing any settings in the phone through any of these steps?
Does it help to activate or register, if any possibility like this is possible?
Other thing I like to ask please, every time i reboot the phone, it takes me first to the bootloader options list. How can i make it go automatically to windows without this bootloader list?

I found out the issue. I was working all this on my 64bit Windows 7 laptop. Then i started doing everything again from scratch on my 32bit windows 7 and it all worked very well. I was able to lock unlock format etc to my card. But now new problem has come and it is very annoying. After installing the Windows Phone 7 7004 on HTC HD2, i logged in to my windows live id and then put activation keys which i got from microsoft. It all worked fine. I was able to download apps from market from my phone itself etc etc. So far so good.
But if i shut down my mobile and restart it. Then the actual problem starts. It boots successfully and shows main screen but now i can only see the screen. I cannot call or receive the call . I cannot press any icon on the phone, the phone simply stops responding.Then what i need to do again is first shut down the phone by removing the battery. Remove the sd card, then boot into the bootloader, reset the phone. And then i restart the phone without sd card, I get the storage error when the phone boots up and it asks me to turn off and put back the card. Then i put back the card and things then come back to normal but now i have to set-up the phone again.
Very painful is not it??
please advice what is going wrong. Is it happening because i am puttting the activation code and downloading apps from market.

I tried upgrading from 7004 to 7720 but it would give out error all the time, so I copied 6-7 cab files at a time for .bat to process. It ran fine for first set of files but afterwards it shows a red message for all of them some thing like shown below, is it normal?

No idea. The whole process took me 2 hours.
for me it took almost 25 minutes but then it restarted mobile and a progress bar on mobile appeared which ran for another hour and finally it was on 7720.

No, just make sure you have all the prerequisites installed. You can install WP7 directly then.

I was wasnt paying attention to the written steps. I had all the files in the same folder and opened the cab sender and pressed B. Its preparing to install and its stuck at 42% did I mess it up?
No, it’s ok. It takes a bit too long going from 42% to 50%. Make sure, you don’t touch it before it boots up on its own.
It finished and everything is working great other than the windows live stuff. Is calling and getting an activation code the only way?
Yes please, they don’t ask many questions. MS US don’t ask anything at all, they might put you on hold for a minute or so.

It says somewhere on xda and msdn that this error occurs if you have not installed right executable. Make sure that you use the right installer between x86 and x64.

I am having problem with installing mango on my HD2, though I can install HD2_Updatable_XBmod_Yuki_v2_native successfully.
The problem is that the HD2 freezes each time I update it with something (i.e. DeviceProvisioning)! I am using Transdent 16GB class 6 microSD, I think this is causing the problem, can someone confirm it?

jayce my htc hd2 wp7.5 wont connect to zune. im wondering if there is another way to put music on it and pictures. and if able how to fix zune? or my phone? coz zune says no device connected. my bluetooth dont work too. so i cant put music on it. zune and bluetooth is the only bug for my hd2. any way you can give me tips to put music or program for it?

Don’t think it will work on Mac. No problem to use it on Windows 7 as I am using it during my testing.

As suggested by you I first installed win 7 and all supportive items. I course thereof I corrupted my 8GB memory card. Now repl it with 16 GB. Thereafter for installing the Mango update and the device positining cab, the windows update cab sender returns an error that phone out of memory. Delete some files to load the mango update. May I request you for some help

I got an issue about update 7720, my htc hd2 is rebooting without reason, do you have that problem after the update? While it is connected to the pc it works, disconnect and begins to restart.

1. OS version shown in the settings is 7661.WP7_5_Trial. Does it make a difference?
2. There is no option for Internet Sharing in settings.

I did notice some faster times though, screamed through it a bit quicker then the install in the video.

UPDATE- After everything was completed I called up the US Microsoft Customer Service (which to find a number for them was nearly impossible) at 1(800) 642-7676. I was re-routed only once to the proper customer service rep and all they asked for was Name, Telephone Number, and email address.
I told the lady that I was receiving the message “There was a problem setting up your Windows Live ID on the phone, and we need an activation code to finish setup. You can call customer service to get the code, then enter it here. If you tap Skip, we’ll let you know the next time you do something that requires activation, so you can call then.” When I was trying to login to my Windows Live ID.
Without questioning anything else (she had no need for IMEI or the model of phone) she came back within 5 minutes with a valid activation key.

BTW any tricks to get the camera working? It demands a hardware button, but the HD2 doesn’t have any…
If not mistaken, use the call button as shutter button. Just try all the buttons… 😉

Yes, you need to follow every single steps here.
The first prerequisite is installation of wm7 called windows phone 7 build 7004.
So in a way you install wm7. Hope that helps.

When i started to install spl i got to know that i have SPL version 3.03 so finally i downloaded HSPL4 and selected spl 2.08 for installation. finally i got the required spl on my mobile. but when i try to upgrade radio or magldr or stock rom i get same error (262 “The rom update utility has encountered communication..”
I am not sure if i need to upgrade radio or stock rom as i feel i might have the same that is required, but confused about magldr if i already have that. i never installed magldr but confused if it was the part of the ROM upgrade that i got in October 2010 from HTC website.
Right now i have 6.5 official rom (for india) running on my mobile. that i got from the HTC website india as only ROM upgrade.
My mobile’s current configurations are:
PB8100 HX-BC
SPL (after spl upgrade/downgrade)-2.08.0000 8G XE
ROM Version 3.14.720.3(04666) WWE
Radio Version 2.15.50.14

I have just performed the update to 7720 on my HTC HD2 without issue…it did take a long time to complete though – approx 2 hours (during which time it appeared as though it had hung). Maybe you need to be more patient?

I had in the first time and have reinstalled a few times and now when it starts up after fresh install it says its the wrong sd card forcing me to remove to continue. Iam sucessful at sending provisioning and then try to execute the 7004 part without sd and it throws 80181198 error.
You need to have SD card on your phone all the time. Else not enough disk space.
but it doesnt recognize it. I dont have mango so cant use unlocl tool 🙁

I went ahead and tried installing 7740 . Everything installed but when the phone started up..it said “Storage card not working – It has been damaged / changed / non-compliant . To Fix this turn off your phone and either remove storage card or replace it with a new compliant card. Then you’ll need to reset ur phone to original factory settings ”
could you please let me know what are the next steps to be taken.. I mean after doing factory reset . which build the phone will go and what all should i be doing to get 7.5 installed.

Thanks Jayce for your help . I rolled it back to 7004. I have couple of questions . With 7004 build on HD2 , when i connect phone to my system, there are some updates available from Zune . Will there be any issues if we go ahead and install those updates. Also how about installing latest WP7 ROM once again as i had issues earlier .

AJ, I’m in the same position as you. WinMo 6.5 on an HTC HD2. I had a long talk with a T-Mobile service rep the other day who, though currently using a Google Nexus, still uses his HD2 with the rom du jour. He’s successfully run Windows 7 and Android Ice Cream. I am not a super-geek, though pretty savvy, and if you were able to successfully install Windows 7, then on to 7.5, I would so appreciate some guidance. Like step-by-step for dummies. Consider it an act of kindness!

Jayce, where can I find this (Windows Phone 7 build 7004 XBmod-Yuki ROM v2) and do you have a step-by-step guide for installing it on an HTC HD2? Though fairly savvy, I’m old enough that I often feel like a dinosaur when I go to sites likeXDA Developers because there is so often a presumed level of competence. Now that I’ve confirmed that my problems with Bing had to do with MS, and with MyPhone gone, Marketplace (for 6.5) gone, I’ve got to bite the bullet, because not only can I not afford another good phone, in principle I don’t believe in planned obsolesence.

****Note – make sure that you have downloaded a HTC HD2 official Windows Mobile ROM from HTC Website for your country. Don’t use other region ROM other than your very own region. As for T-Mobile HD2, do download yours from T-Mobile website. And use free unzip software – 7-Zip to extract the exe file.

Thank you Jayce I have it done now. Now i have to be patient with the touch screen its the hell when typing hahahaha. But never mind i only need it for calling. I liked the WM7 but it drains the battery in a few hours, can’t charge it from work. If I like to call after work my cp is off no more battery. Thank you very much Jayce.

After I complete steps 8 and 9, my HD2 freezes. I have tried you steps several times and even double checked if I have all of the right .cabs etc. I can go back and reinstall the original yuki.v2.1 no problem but after I install the DeviceProvisioning.cab my phone becomes useless… any suggestions?
