Yes. It is a working brand new notebook. A little bit under power with no wireless connection. Still OK for everyday office, entertainment use. Not for 3D gaming…

Too bad. Didn’t read your article earlier. Just bought a Dell notebook (Vostro 1500). So far it performs well without any problems. Overall I’m quite satisfy with the hardware spec except for the sound card. Sigmatel <— Don’t support hardware buffering . Still using WinXP as i tend to game a lot. Highly recommend to those who love gaming but have a limited budget.

How much you bought it? Using external graphics card or Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100?

Probably something to do with DNS. Ubuntu has this knack for reset the DNS setting that you’ve set. That may be the issue. I used to have that during 6.10 days, not sure if that’s the same problem now.

Oh… Will try to troubleshoot it again when free. Really seldom use Ubuntu anyway…

How fast was the application process for the Credit Card and for the laptop?

Tempted to get one for the wife myself, install Ubuntu and be done with. She’s a non-IT literate anyway, so it’s mostly office apps and email / surf net.

Bought it for RM 4000 during Dec07. Now the price still haven’t gone down much. Using T7250, 2GB RAM & Nvidia 8600M GT 256MB dedicated VRAM (unfortunately is a DDR2…DDR3 is way too expansive even now) no $$$ buy. Even though, I can play most DX9 (MOHAB, HL2, DOOM3 etc) with 1024×768 with max settings.

Matdesa, I am not sure about the Credit Card process time because I asked my friend to buy for me using his card. The laptop take around 14 days to arrive after place order.

Teg, yup. I am using 1GB + 512MB RAM. 1GB + 512MB RAM should be better than 512MB + 512MB configuration. Why? Windows will start to use hard drive as page memory when software requires more than 1GB of RAM.

One more thing, i found that HP service is very lousy. I called up customer service, after they checked they said didn’t receive my fax. So i called up the number to posted earlier, luckily they DID receive my fax.

HP never reply my email inquiry too (Ironically, their auto reply system stated my email will be replied in 1 business day)

Hi Jayce, I do not have much knowledge on software and hardware but I have already used the DELL laptop for sometime. All the technical and setup is done by my office. I am now consider to buy a laptop for myself and I notice it is quite cheap for this offer. I wonder I would able to handle the setup by myself if I take this offer. Please advice is it easy to do all this. I would need to have a windos XP with word, excel and powerpoint; WIFI to access internet, ADOBE, perhaps play DVD; etc. Do you this I should take this offer?

Do you install Windows XP by yourself before? And install all the drivers?

Noted –
C749TU does not have wireless. You need to add-on yourself. More RAM is needed to run Adobe application. And it run slower.

C747TU is better than C749TU. It has Windows Vista build-in. And have wireless too. But the price is higher too.

Just buy a USB WiFi will do. It is around RM50 to RM60. Then follow the instructions to install the driver. It is not hard to do so.

Hi chick, don’t fret, when I confirm my order do you know how long they ask me to wait? 25 business days!!! but I received after 2 weeks later, so I believe yours should be arriving by next or 2nd week of April. BTW, they will send to you using some cheapo local courier service which is by lorry (in my case) so make sure somebody is around to receive the notebook but don’t worry, they will call U 1st before send.

C778TU looks better. It should be using the same drivers if the motherboard is the same.

sky, look at it this way, if ur those who wan hassle free or mainly using notebook only, then C778TU is better. I’m those who like to tamper on the hardware and using notebook as secondary device since I have desktop as my primary, in fact I dun require dual core since I mainly use for browsing for me the RM949 is sufficient.

Jus my 2 cents thought, for me i will take those system that “Don’t” come pre-installed wit O/S. Reason is that whenever I install o/s to a new system, it become a challenge for me. Do you know that the 1st time I install o/s for C749TU it took me hours jus to be able to install it (my o/s disc won’t run) and another few hours to search for drivers. In fact I’ve jus found all those (complete) drivers recently.
WinXP will still be my prefered o/s unless I got core2duo / quad wit 4GB ram, then maybe I will try vista.
Hey it’s better to learn how to install & maintain ur system rather than jus send for service whenever problem arise, who knows wat they copy from ur system, maybe another “Edison” story?? he..he..

This Compaq’s service really questionable. I placed my order on 18/March, till now i’m still waiting for it to arrive *sigh*

U r right better call them as for my case, I have already faxed in the order on 1st April, no one call me till 4 April. I called them on the 4th as the receiver reply me that the sales person will contact me by 10th, so I wait till 10th but no one call me as well. I did call them again on the 10th and explain all the situation above then a lady Stephenie called me to take my order. At last my order confirmed. According to her they will send me an e-mail to confirm it. Unfortunately, I did. Call them again on 14th but the receiver said Step will return my call but she did. Call again today, respone by Ms Leow that my order already process and they have already charged on my credit card on 11th. The lap will only arrived in 14th working day from 14th. You got to follow up closely else they won’t reply. I am still waiting for mine to arrive.

C, jus download all those required drivers to a thumbdrive, install winxp to the notebook, once complete, copy all the drivers to ur notebook and install all the drivers 1 by 1.

So, it means that I should install the window xp first then only install the driver, right. Sorry, because I though I should install the driver first. BTW, what should I keyin to install the window xp after I insert the disk?
Ha! Ha! I really only know how to use it but not to setup it. This is 1st try and a good learn path for me. I have bought a few computer desk and lap top but all are come with everything ready to use. Hope that you won’t feel unconfortable to teach someon with 0 knowledge. He! He! I really want to try it……….

C, just follow RR instructions. It should not be hard with 0 knowledge. Just it will waste you a lot of time when you need to restart to do it again and again. FYI, I learn PC by myself during secondary school. Not sure how many time that I have formated my PC during that time.

c, for the pci device, u must install uaa driver 1st, then it will detect sound & modem, as for ethernet controller, jus install the wifi (atheros)

Hi Faiz, please use the drivers posted at my website. Based on your sound issue, you are using the wrong sound driver. Same apply to other device. Please try all the driver first and let us know the result then. Thanks.

Hi C, for sound did u install the microsoft uaa driver 1st? after install u must use the “have disk” method or let it search through web for the “High definition audio” driver. As for wifi would u mind explaining how u install the driver? (for the intel & broadcom driver u just run the exe file) as for atheros u have to manual update the driver.

I have try but I m not very sure how to manual update the atheros. I click into the atheros AR2425 WLAN b/g that u given, it link me to the file xp32-5.3.0.56-whql.zip. I open the file. It show 3 files only; ar5211.sys, net5211.cat, net5211.inf. How to do manual update??

since u have extracted the files, go to device manager double click on the “ethernet controller” then click on install driver button, next select “install from a list or specific location”, browse to the folder where u have extracted the files and press “OK”. Press Next to continue, the driver will then be installed.
Hope this help.

I try it before but can not browse that folder. i did try to open the http://www.atheros.cz as well can i down load from there but I am not sure which one should i use. i try the AR5001A, AR5111/AR5211, 32bit but also cannot work.

I found it xp32-5.3.0.56-whql.zip……..but it show “internet explorer cannot download xp32-5.3.0.56-whql.zip from http://www.atheros.cz the connection with the server was reset”……………it is still not working.

C, i believe u still haven’t extract xp32-5.3.0.56-whql.zip yet, u only browse it in the windows explorer tat’s why u can’t find the folder during the driver installation.
So wat must u do is create a new folder, then select all the 3 files and copy to the new folder or jus use winrar / winzip to extract the file and then re-do the steps that i mentioned in post no 98

I manage to install the atheros AR5006X wireless network adapter but when I click on the wireless icon at the right hand side bottom “it show no wireless network found in range, make sure the wireless switch on your computer is on.” althought my area having wireless and i have try to press the on key at the left upper side. Do I need to set any other to on the wireless? Please help.

good to hear tat, as for the upper key for wireless, have u install the quick launch driver? once install, the switch will function but the light will remain orange then press refresh network list to find other wireless network

You feel like a bit unpassion with me. I am sorry because I really don’t know much. I did install the quick launch driver that you given sp38171, unfortunately the light is still red/orange for wifi. I try to reinstall and reinstall, but it doesn’t work. I just thought would it be anythink else i forgotten or would it be not compatible or the hardware problem??

The light is always orange for WiFi. We have to live with it like this for the moment.

I have a Presario C700 laptop that use to have Vista on it, but I had some issues so I installed Win XP pro. The chipset is a intel 2 core duo CPU T5750. I was able to find all the drivers except the audio. Does anyone know where to get them?

I just bought a C799TU here in Australia. there is a note on the carton it says “wireless access point require and not inlcuded” what does it means?

By the way, the retailer told me this model is eligible for AUD 100 cashback but I coudn’t find this model on HP’s website, not sure if I can still claim… any idea?

Not sure what is inside your C799TU. Wireless access point is something like modem that you can connect to. It’s normal not included.

As for the cash back, you better call HP to find out more.

No. C799TU might have wireless module. I say ‘might’ because I don’t have the C799TU spec with me.

When you have wireless module in your notebook, you need to connect to wireless modem (wireless access point) to connect to Internet.

Just ask HP if you have any doubt. They sure can help you.
