One of the best ClockworkMod Recovery features ~ full system backup and restore with Nandroid. How to backup Samsung Galaxy S II with ClockworkMod Recovery? First of all, you need to install ClockworkMod Recovery on Samsung Galaxy S2. You can use CWM Manager application to make a backup if you install CWM through CF-Root. Else you need to load ClockworkMod Recovery itself to do so. Below video will guide you to backup Samsung Galaxy S2 by using CWM Manager. Read the step by step guide for more information…
Backup via CWM Manager
- Open CWM Manager.
- Click on Backup ~ Create a new backup.
- Enter backup name then click OK.
- That’s all.
Backup via ClockworkMod Recovery
- Turn off Samsung Galaxy S2.
- Press and hold down Volume Up + Home + Power buttons at the same time.
- Release all buttons when you see SGS2 Logo.
- ClockworkMod Recovery will be loaded then.
- Go to backup and restore.
- Select Backup.
- That’s all.
Note – backup will be stored at sdcard\clockworkmod\backup folder.
Make sure that you make a backup of Samsung Galaxy S2 with ClockworkMod Recovery from time to time to avoid data loss. Prevention is always better than cure…
if we install cwm recovery and later flash a new rom, does the previous backup data will be deleted?
No, as long as your sdcard data still intact, the backup is there.
litening 6.1 doesn’t hv cwm. so can we just simply install cwmmanager.apk or do we need to root again using cf-root? need help here~
It has CWM but no CWM Manager. Just boot into CWM will do.
owh~ thanks
which one is better: this CWM back up or back up via Titanium Back up?
Both are not the same. CWM is full system backup. TB is good for ROM upgrade.
hi , how to recover or witch image to recover without recovering previously wiped firmware in order to instal new ROM?
do i have to recover in advanced recovery in CWM?
thank you
Hmm… Not so sure what you are asking about. To restore, follow this guide – https://www.jayceooi.com/2011/08/08/how-to-restore-samsung-galaxy-s2-with-clockworkmod-recovery-video/
when i recover after installing new ROM,it brings me back to my previous firmware version. And installation includes deleting of all data.
The Q is : How to recover or which file to select to recover ?(boot, cache, data, system and there is nandroid.md5)
thank you
CWM backup is meant for full system restore usually. You can try to restore each components like data, system. But it might not match to new installed ROM and not work at all.
Use Titanium Backup if you want to restore apps and data on new ROM. https://www.jayceooi.com/2011/08/24/how-to-backup-restore-all-apps-and-settings-when-upgrade-android-rom/
hey jayce~ does cwm backup the external sd card too if the ext-sdcard is in the phone?
Nope, it stores at internal sdcard only.
during backup process
jayce ,i use cwm manager backup when i go to the clockworkmod/backup file and open the file tat nothing???
Hmm… The backup files should be there. Anything different when compare to the video above?
Hi, I tried to do CWM back up but get an error “can’t access to /system/csc/ORA/system” Successfully applied multi-CSC appears below. Any idea?
Hmm… No idea. Maybe it is the things that you installed wrongly that causing this error.
I have rooted correctly I believe as I have ROM Manager and also CWM, I get the normal ! when I boot up the phone. Most applications will ask for SuperUser Access and is then granted, this will only happen on rooted phones I think? I have BVKH2 Kernel but could not find an insecure one to match so I used DXKH2 instead. Shall I root the phone again?
Yes, SuperUser will give access to those apps that need root access.
No need to root again. Your phone is rooted already.
Thank you for your quick responses. I have one question, should I use CF Root? I don’t believe I have used this for anything??
You already rooted your phone and have CWM, right? If yes, why do you want to use CF-Root again?
I havent used CF Root at all I dont believe. I did not have Superuser as an app I had to download this manually and also CWM. If I used CF Root, I thought this may solve my backup issue as it would use Clockwork Mod Recovery..
“can’t access to /system/csc/ORA/system” might be caused by incompatible kernel because yours is Orange carrier branded firmware. You might need to flash non carrier branded firmware in order to use CF-Root.
Any idea which one I could use?
I am using XXKI4 now. You can try it if you want. Note – I am not sure it will work on carrier branded SGS2 or not because I did have one.
What’s the difference between the two backup methods? Sorry newb question..
Basically, they are the same. Just one with better GUI.

You don’t have CWM but stock recovery. https://www.jayceooi.com/2011/08/03/samsung-galaxy-s2-clockworkmod-recovery-mode/
hi jayce. am trying to do system backup (am using custom rom). but when i perform, it said no sd_card or ext_sdcard found. does my backup complete?
if not how do i fix it
No if nothing in sdcard\clockworkmod\backup folder. Are you using CWM to backup?
If one uses ROM manager to try out different ROM’s.
I suppose you can then use Clockworkmod to restore back to the stock ROM.
Let’s say after rooting you restored the stock kernel…
Then … what happens if firmware upgrade is done with KIES?
Does this overwrite Clockworkmod? How does it conflict with ROM manager? Will root access stay after a Samsung upgrade?
I don’t use ROM Manager. No idea.
Yes, upgrade new firmware with Samsung Kies will overwrite CWM. Root access will be removed too.
So if I understand correctly, there’s firmware, kernel and ROMs. And if I will root the phone and use ROM manager to install CM7, it will put a custom kernel and a ROM. Maybe I am wrong about this?
So let’s say Samsung updates the firmware to fix a few bugs to make their ICS ROM working better and I’m using CWM+CM7. Can I follow your instructions here : https://www.jayceooi.com/2011/08/08/how-to-install-firmware-on-samsung-galaxy-s2-with-odin-video/ ? To update the firmware without attacking my recovery manager and the ROMs? Or will it “fxxk it up” as well? Sorry if it’s stupid questions, it will become more clear when I have my phone I hope.
Use CWM to install CM7.
Install official firmware will remove CWM and root.
Dear Jayce,
for this CWM process, need to take how long for downloading?
Depend on your data to backup.
Dear Jayce-san,
thank you.

I think so. Didn’t use memo much.
Hello Jayce,,
I was doing backup my stock rom but it say can’t mount,so i try backup into internal sd and it goes smooth, but it different from what i see from you video is it ok?(CWM ver 5.0.2.7)
If i install custom rom then i want to restore back stock rom is it ok if CWM version not same, because lately lot of people having problem to restore back.
Yes, CWM 5 can backup to external SD card. I have no problem to restore CWM 4 backup with CWM 5.

Yes. No time to try new ROM yet.
Anyways thanks for your explanation, hope you can make more article and video about new custom rom on galaxy s2 and Happy Chinese New Year for you.

Which CF-Root did you install?
